The Exile
The Siren Song (Old title: The Exile)
It’s rumored that three sirens live around a forgotten village at northwestern Mexico. The truth is that a woman called Mercedes has got away from her husband’s violence for 40 years by staying at the seashore. Despite the harshness of the land and her job, she establishes a strong relationship with the nature, performs a stereotypically masculine work and becomes an independent fisherwoman.
However, her way of life becomes a pretext for the inhabitants of the old village to stigmatize her “siren”. She endures the loneliness and passes on all of her vision and skill to Maria and Nora, her daughter and granddaughter. However, the poverty spiral in which they fall drives them to return to their village and give up their natural way of life; Mercedes taking care of her grandsons, questioning her own value, and the younger ones, doing stable but poorly paid jobs at little factories. Now, they are making the last attempt to return to their self-determined way of life and to recover the freedom that they only find at the sea.
